Spring Break!
This break has been dedicated to 1) sleeping, 2) job searching, 3) reading a novel, and 4) running errands around Knoxville. I have split my time amongst those activities, and I feel this time has been very productive. I hate searching for a job, but I do not feel alone in my loathing of this character-building exercise. I have also spent some time looking for a new spring handbag, but have had as much success with that endeavor as I have on the job front, which is to say, none. However, hope remains! Any advice on both of those fronts will be most welcome. :)

Another Saturday in Sunny Nashville
Another Saturday in February, and a surprisingly productive day for me. After eleven, yes, eleven, hours of sleep, I roused at approximately 10:30 am, when Michael Buble and I brewed a pot of sumatra coffee and made orange-nutmeg french toast. It was delicious and the apartment smelled lovely. After a leisurely breakfast together, Michael and I turned our attention to more scholarly pursuits. Today I had to write my first paper of the semester, which seems unusually late as we have just completed our seventh week of class. Nevertheless, I rallied the few brains cells I have left committed to my education, and I read three essays by Max Weber on charismatic leadership (not the denomination but general divinely given power or talent). I then cranked out five pages of reflection in an hour, just in time to meet my friend Sarah from the bookstore for an afternoon dedicated to Target, vintage clothes shopping, and fruit popsicles. Well, I had a pistachio popsicle, which is actually a nut, not a fruit. I thoroughly enjoyed my sunny afternoon with Sarah. We have been talking about spending time together, especially at Target, for quite some time now, but today was the first time we actually made the effort. I had a lovely time and am very grateful to have been introduced to The Hip Zipper, an adorable vintage store in East Nashville. It sounds quite pretentious of me to say that, but I am sincere in my adoration. I had almost convinced myself that I needed not only one but two pairs of white gloves for all the outings I make with Joan Holloway and Betty Draper, but a quick glance in the mirror at my All-Star lace-ups and my black North Face TKA 100 fleece was the jolt back to reality that saved me at least $25. That being said, I plan on incorporating The Hip Zipper into my shopping repertoire. (On a side note, I tried on every chic hat they had in the store and not one fit over this mop of hair on my head. How am I supposed to look like Joan Holloway when I can't even get a hat on my head!)

4. Did anyone close to you die? No
5. What countries did you visit? I stayed here in the USA.
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009? A career plan.

First Year of MTS: COMPLETE!
Well, ladies and gentlemen, my first year as a graduate student has officially come to a close. I took my last final this morning and submitted my last paper this evening. I am so very glad to be finished and feel no closer to deciding what to do with my life than I did in August. Rather, I feel as though I only continually eliminate potential career options. How long can this process of elimination last?!
I have had wonderful professors and been able to cultivate relationships with a professor in each area of history in which I have some slight interest. I feel as though they all have complete confidence in me, which is precisely what I need, for so often I feel as if I am in over my head, struggling to stay afloat amid all the confusion and uncertainty that accompanies an academic life. Not only that, but the differences between my undergraduate and graduate experiences are so stark that sometimes I wonder how they can both be called "school." This year has tested me in so many areas of life, most of which I am finally realizing and being forced to confront. However, I feel as though the end of this academic year marks a new beginning. Each semester is a fresh start, especially those separated by an entire summer. I have a month until I have to start my Latin classes in June, and I intend on spending this month focusing on the personal aspects of this past year that have been perpetually pushed to the back shelf in deference to academic concerns.
This is the first summer that I will not be living at home, working for CDB. I will be staying here in Nashville, working in the Vanderbilt Bookstore and taking Latin classes each morning from 7:45 to 10. I am going to Memphis this upcoming weekend, Loribeth's wedding in Lexington, NC, at the end of May, followed by Deborah's graduation in Colorado Springs, a trip to Louisville for Whitney's wedding in July, and hopefully a trip to NYC in August between summer and fall semesters. That pretty much sums up the majority of my summer plans, though if life continues to surprise me as it has, there are bound to be some disturbances to that well-planned schedule.
Anyways, if any of you need a trip to Music City, I will be here all summer and would love to see you!
xoxo

Yeah that's when you find yourself
Where you go through life
So sure of where you’re headin'
And you wind up lost and it's
The best thing that could have happened
‘Cause sometimes when you lose your way it's really just as well
Because you find yourself
Yeah that’s when you find yourself

It's been forever
Yes, my friends, it has been forever since I have posted on here. A lot has happened in my life since May 28, but there is no need to recap. I am here at Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville, starting a new life.
Even though everything is different, I feel a bit like I did at Furman, simply because I am still doing schoolwork. I still go to class, I still have homework, I still have exams and papers, but now I work twice as much, go to bed at 10:30, and have a noticeably absent social life. I am making friends, do not despair. For example, this past Saturday night I went a gathering at one of the div student's apartments, and we had a great time just goofing off and not doing schoolwork. It's great that so many people are here to talk about all the stuff I love learning about, but sometimes, I just want to talk about nothing thought-provoking. And that's what I got to do on Saturday night.
I would be remiss if I did not mention my dear friends, Will and Polly. I cannot express what a blessing they have been and are in my life. I knew that I was going to enjoy having them in Nash-vegas with me, but I cannot express what lifesavers they have been to me already. They welcome me into their home at any and every time, which I consider to be a huge deal since they have only had this home together for less than 2 months! They are generous in their time, their food, their words and their inclusion of me in their social circle. I am infinitely indebted to them. I hope that someday I will be able to share with them the same love they have shown me.
Concerning my classes:
A) Biblical Hebrew - it is great, it is difficult, and I am going to feel reallllly cool once I can read the Old Testament in its original language - however, I am extremely far away from that point. I know, like, 50 words max. But I do enjoy the change of pace from my other classes that it affords me.
B) Formation of the Christian Tradition - my church history class that I LOVE. It is intense and loads of information and theology, but I get completely absorbed in the lectures and enjoy it immensely. It requires a lot of reading and studying.
C) Hebrew Bible - my Old Testament class - my professor is hilarious, but it is no longer as great as I once thought it was. I have really no idea what to expect on the midterm, so I will have a better analysis of this class once I get that test back, which I have yet to take. Again, loads of reading.
D) Pastoral Care - so far I have learned that I am a terrible listener and do not want to be a counselor. Our work is just busywork and my professor (though her mannerisms and classes remind me of my mom and aunt) is very strange and thinks this subject is more interesting than I do. I am not cut out to be a pastor, and I am already sick of this class. Thankfully I have Will and Barclay to entertain me.
I work in the Divinity Library and the Vanderbilt Bookstore. I can do homework in the library, but not at the bookstore. I would complain about working, but I must make money to live, so I won't. Also, my schedule worked out quite nicely - I start at 8 on Mon, Wed, and Fri, then 9 on Tues and 10 on Thurs. I never work/have class until 6, and I don't work Fri, Sat or Sun unless I am filling in for someone else or they specially request for me to work on the weekend. So yes, I am grateful that it worked out that I have free weekends and Friday nights, and really all nights since I am done at 6. But that does not include homework. But such is the life of a grad student, so different from undergrad (at least my undergrad experience).
I am really happy where I am, and I look forward to all that I will learn and experience in the next 3 years here!
(And I will try to keep up with my posts more frequently...)

Big News...
I feel like this is an incredibly impersonal way to let you all know about my recent life decisions, but since I am unsure as to who reads this, I am going to go ahead and tell you all. Just pretend this is a very personal conversation, and I am telling you and you alone. :)
I am going to Vanderbilt Divinity School this fall!! I sent in my letter to the Admissions Office yesterday, so it is official. I will be moving to Nashville at the end of the summer, but I have no idea when, where or with whom. Obviously I have a lot of details to iron out, but at least I know where to start. Thanks to all of you who have prayed and coached me through this discernment process. I am glad that this major decision is over and done, and I thank God for closing and opening doors for me that made it crystal clear that I should be going to VDS.
Now if I can only muster up some enthusiasm for my last two classes at Furman...

Big News...
Today I received my acceptance letter to Vanderbilt Divinity School, along with an offer of 70% tuition grant. (Of course dependent on FAFSA and my filling out an application.) But I am thrilled and cannot believe that they not only accepted me but also offered me substantial financial aid - which means that they want me! This was the school I was concerned that I wouldn't get accepted to, and here they are offering me money! Talk about a boost in my self-esteem!
And this is the first thing that is a tangible option for next year. I am still waiting to hear from Duke and Teach for America, but now I have a viable option, that I would actually love to do. What a way to start off my spring term - if it wasn't already weirding me out that this is my last term here at Furman, my last term in college, now I have something to look at for the fall. I think it is the perfect boost to jump start my spring term! I am going to have to call Vanderbilt and Teach for America to try to get the dates changed around a bit so I will know about both of them before I have to decide one way or another. I would really love to do Teach for America and grad school in two years, but I will have to wait to see how things pan out with Teach for America before I get my heart set on it.
Anyways, just wanted to share the good news. :) I am still smiling about it. I am tacking my acceptance letter to my wall so I can see it every day. :)

Here's to Hindsight...
We'll raise our glasses
To puzzle pieces
And the way they fit together
That we never saw til now
Here's to questions
That meet their answers
In the bright light of hindsight
It will all come clear somehow
......
And all todays uncertainties
And all of my impatience
Will just be flecks of color
In the picture that He's painting

I got out of work early today, how glorious! Now to finish my paper on Fools Rush In so that tomorrow night I can enjoy my par-tay! I am so excited! :)
P.S. I love how portable my Mac is - I can take it anywhere and it doesn't weigh 100 pounds and the battery will last for hours. I love it. I highly recommend it!
P.S.S. I submitted my Teach for America application this afternoon! And now I wait....
